Pebbledash Painting in Swansea

Pebbledash painting in Swansea by Daffodil Decor, painted pebbledash exterior

Daffodil Decor are Swansea’s pebbledash painters, covering the interwar and post-war suburbs of SA1, SA2, and SA3.

Pebbledash is one of the most common exterior finishes across Swansea’s suburbs. It is also one of the trickier surfaces to paint properly.

What we cover:

  • Pebbledash walls — full house or upper storey only
  • Surface preparation — pressure washing, mould treatment, repointing loose areas
  • Colour changes and refresh — breathable masonry paint, wide range of shades
  • Smooth render and brick sections — matched where properties have mixed finishes

Swansea has a large stock of interwar and post-war semis with pebbledash finishes, particularly across Sketty, Killay, and Uplands. We know this housing well.

Most have pebbledash to the upper storey with brick or render below, and many haven’t been repainted in a decade or more.

Rob and team carried out full redecoration of our newly purchased property recently. Rob gave an incredibly detailed summary of work required and was able to start the project quickly for us. They worked to quite tight timescales to get it ready for us to move in and were so accommodating and professional. We're so happy with the result and would definitely use them again and recommend to others.

Pebbledash Painting Services

How Pebbledash is Painted

Painting pebbledash is not the same as painting smooth render or brickwork. The surface is small stones and pebbles embedded into a render coat. This heavily textured finish demands a different approach.

A standard roller cannot reach into the crevices between the stones. We use a long-pile masonry roller and work the paint in by brush to ensure full coverage across the peaks and into the recesses.

Pebbledash also consumes significantly more paint per square metre than smooth surfaces. This is accounted for in our quote.

For large areas, we can apply the first coat by airless spray to speed up coverage, with a brush-and-roller pass to work it into the surface texture.

Surface Preparation

Good preparation is what separates a finish that holds for ten years from one that starts peeling within two.

Every pebbledash job starts with a thorough pressure wash to remove biological growth, surface dirt, and loose material. Swansea’s climate means north and west-facing walls accumulate significant moss and algae growth.

Daffodil Decor treats biological growth before painting on every job. We apply a mould treatment to affected areas and allow it to work before washing off.

Once the surface is clean, we inspect for areas requiring repair. Detached areas are repointed with exterior filler before any paint is applied.

Colour Changes and Finishing

Colour Changes and Refresh

The colour transformation on a pebbledash house is one of the most dramatic exterior paint results available. A 1950s semi that has been grey-beige for thirty years looks almost unrecognisable in anthracite, cream, or heritage green.

We use breathable masonry paint throughout. Non-breathable paints applied to a surface that holds moisture will blister and peel. Breathable coatings let the surface dry out naturally while protecting against driving rain.

Daffodil Decor advises on pebbledash colour choices as part of the quoting process. Colours popular on Swansea’s interwar housing stock include warm whites, light greys, and anthracite grey.

Partial Pebbledash

Many properties in Sketty, Killay, and Uplands have pebbledash only to the upper storey, with brick or smooth render below. This is a very common configuration on 1930s and 1950s semis.

Painting the pebbledash section while leaving the brick unpainted requires a clean paint line and careful masking at the transition. We have experience with this configuration and take care with the junction between finishes.

Repairs Before Painting

Swansea’s weather puts exteriors under sustained pressure. Properties on exposed sites in Killay or facing west above Mumbles can show more weathering than comparable properties facing south.

Before any colour is applied, we check the full surface for hairline cracks in the render base and areas where previous paint has lost adhesion. Any remedial work required is identified at the quoting stage and included in the price.

How It Works

1. Property Inspection

We assess the full extent of pebbledash, surface condition, biological growth, and any areas requiring repair before quoting.

2. Surface Preparation

Pressure washing, mould treatment, and any necessary filling or repointing.

3. Masking

Windows, doors, sills, and any surrounding brickwork or render sections are carefully masked.

4. First Coat

Long-pile roller and brush application to ensure full coverage into the textured surface.

5. Second Coat

Applied once the first coat is fully dry. Final inspection of all edges and transitions before we leave.
